Friends,
Today is Thursday, which means I normally send out my newsletter of five suggestions. I’ve been doing this now for almost a year and a half, which feels wild — but then again, this entire past year and a half has been so wild, so transformative.
As most of you know, when I launched Maple Suggests I was on the cusp of ending a very long, loving relationship. You can read more about that here if you haven’t already. I knew ending it was going to be a terrible experience — even though I also knew it had to be done to grow — and I was going to need a lot of help. I started Maple Suggests as a kind of silly side project to get myself writing again, but looking back now, this little newsletter has been so much more than that; it’s given me structure, support, and purpose. It’s been a kind of anchor. It connected me with you.
I know it sounds like I’m ramping up to say Maple Suggests is done, but that’s not the case. Here’s the deal: things are changing. I’m back and settled in Brooklyn, I’m making some career changes… I bought some canvas and am going to try painting my way through the winter, maybe? I’m spending more free time with people I love. And I’m going to keep on writing because there has been nothing more satisfying than reading your responses to my essays — but because priorities have shifted, I’m changing things up a bit around here.
First off, I’m taking away all paid subscriptions. All writing is free going forward.
Secondly, I’m not promising regular essays anymore — mostly because I want to try and get these pieces published in places where larger audiences can find them (you’ve all given me the confidence to submit things, now. Thank you for that).
And lastly, my weekly Maple Suggests newsletter is turning monthly. You’ll get 10 suggestions each letter. And because this is my own damn show and I do what I damn well please (!), I might send out other notes in-between. :) As always, it’ll be a bag of surprises around here.
People who are current or former paid subscribers, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. Every single penny went straight to my editor. It’s amazing what $30 per person can do.
That said, I love you all more than words can say. Thank you for everything. Forward we go.
Until next time,
xo Mapes
